Amid popular discontent, parliament raises its budget to EGP 1.5 billion

EgyWatch – June 11, 2019

The House of Representatives Planning and Budget Committee approved the draft budget for the new fiscal year 2019/2020 for EGP 1.551 billion compared to EGP 1.4 billion in the current fiscal year, an increase of 7 percent.

Many Egyptians expressed their frustration with this decision which follows a wave of increased prices that has affected millions of Egyptians. Adding to their frustration is the parliament’s silence and continual endorsement of increasing the people’s taxes.

Meanwhile, in April 2018, the House of Representatives agreed to increase the salaries of the Prime Minister, his deputies, ministers, Vice President and Speaker of the House of Representatives. He also agreed to have the military’s pensions increased by 15 percent starting July 1, 2018.
