The Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) announced on Thursday the results of the labour force research for the second quarter of 2019, where the unemployment rate reached 7.5 per cent of the total labour force, compared to 8.1 per cent in the first quarter of the year.

The estimated size of the labour force is 28.069 million compared to 27.968 million in the previous quarter, an increase of 0.4 per cent.

The urban labour force was 12.026 million, while the rural population was 16.043 million.

The number of unemployed reached 2.094 million (962,000 males, 1.132 million females), 7.5 per cent of the total labour force, a decrease of 173,000 unemployed from the first quarter of 2019 by 7.6 per cent, and a decrease of 781,000 unemployed from the same quarter of the previous year by 27.2 per cent.

The results of the labour force research showed that there is a 4.2 per cent rate of unemployment among males and 5.7 per cent in the first quarter of 2019 compared to 6.7 per cent in the same quarter of the previous year. The unemployment rate among females was 22.4 per cent of total females in the labour force, while it was 18.9 per cent in the first quarter of 2019 compared to 21.2 per cent in the same quarter of the previous year.
