For the 13th time, Egypt’s parliament approves state of emergency extension

The Egyptian House of Representatives has agreed, once again, to extend the state of emergency throughout the country for a period of three months. The parliament announced its approval during a plenary session on Monday after a decision by General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to extend the declared state of emergency for a period of three months.

This extension is the 13th time it has been extended after it was first announced in April 2017. Under the state of emergency, it is permissible to impose a curfew.

Human rights defenders say the extension of the state of emergency for long periods of time is responsible for strengthening repression and expanding the detention of political activists in an unprecedented way.
