The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics in Egypt said that the unemployment rate increased to 9.6% in the second quarter of 2020, compared to 7.5% a year ago. He explained that the rise came due to the repercussions of the Coronavirus, which led to the suspension of schools, the suspension of air traffic, the partial closure of shops, and the ban on transportation. The statement revealed that the labor force amounted to 26.689 million individuals, compared to 29.008 million in the previous quarter, down 8%. Simultaneously, the unemployed reached 2.574 million, with increase of 480,000 over the corresponding that quarter a year ago.
According to a government study, it is expected that the Coronavirus pandemic crisis will cause the poverty rate in Egypt to rise from about 30% to more than 40%, which means that about 12.5 million people have joined the list of poor, which currently includes about 30 million.
