2,000 workers strike in Alexandria to raise wages

Two thousand workers for the LORD razor blade manufacturer, which is based in Alexandria, announced a full strike after the company’s administration ignored their demands. They demanded raising wages to at least EGP 2,400, which is the minimum wage defined by the government.

The Centre for Trade Unions’ and Workers’ Services said that the current average wage of the workers in the company is about EGP 2,000. CUTWS attributed the strike to the fact that the administration broke its promise to discuss the workers’ demands, and instead of approving them decided on an EGP 300 reward to abandon them, which fueled the rage of the workers.

Workers’ protests have increased over the past several months. The Arab Network for Human Rights Information recorded 80 labour protests over the first quarter of 2021, including suicidal cases because of the deterioration of living conditions, and 44 protests in the second quarter.
