Egypt cuts flour rations of subsidized food bakeries

Several subsidized bread bakeries have witnessed disorder after the Ministry of Supply decided to reduce allocated flour rations by 10% until Ramadan, claiming that there was a lack of consumption during the month. Many bakery owners said that the demand for bread during the current Ramadan is more than any year.

According to bakery owners, the decision resulted in depriving citizens of receiving their share of subsidized bread. In addition, technical errors in the implementation of the decision led to the doubling of the quota deduction in some bakeries, reaching 20 or 30%, before the directorates rectified these errors. The decision also caused arguments between citizens, bakery owners, and workers. Bakery owners also complained about the government’s lack of transparency with citizens and that their profits are diminishing due to such decisions.
