Researcher Ahmed Samir Santawi has said that the Cairo International Airport authorities have prevented him from travelling, despite receiving a presidential pardon last month after he was imprisoned on charges of spreading false news. Santawi’s lawyer, Ahmed Ragheb, said that he would submit a request to the Passports Authority and the Public Prosecution to know the reasons for preventing Santawi from travelling to complete his studies. Santawi, a master’s student in anthropology at the Central European University in Vienna, was arrested in February 20121. In July, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi issued a presidential pardon for Santawi, who was serving a four-year prison sentence for spreading false news.
