Mohamed Abdel Hamid: Political detainee with colon cancer passes away in Badr 3 Prison Complex
Egyptian political detainee Alsayed Mohamed Abdel Hamid Al-Saifi, 61 years, passed away in Badr 3 Prison Complex in Badr City, Cairo, reported Committee for Justice. CFJ added Saifi was suffering from colon cancer, but the Egyptian authorities refused to be transferred to a hospital outside the prison.
Al-Saifi, a mosque servant in Sharqia governorate, was arrested last September for an in-absentia death sentence against him in the case of assassinating the public prosecutor, Hesham Barakat, in June 2015.
CFJ has recorded five deaths among political detainees in Egyptian prisons since July 2022, along with 1163 cases since 2013. Early in 2022, the organization criticized Egyptian prisons’ mass executions, refuting the authorities’ claim of an upcoming compromise. In 2021, CFJ reported the deteriorating detention conditions in Egyptian prisons after recording 62 deaths among detainees.
