On Saturday, the family of political activist Ahmed Doma called on President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to pardon him. “On December 3, Ahmed begins his tenth year in prison, far from us,” his family wrote in a public statement. Doma was arrested in December 2013 and is serving a 15-year prison sentence. His family has appealed to President Sisi to pardon him, saying, “We hope to see him soon.”
Human rights reports said that Doma suffers from diseases. In November, Amnesty International posted a series of tweets on Twitter calling on the Egyptian government to release prisoners of conscience, including Doma, immediately. The rights group said that no amount of public relations could hide Egypt’s deteriorating human rights record.
