May records 196 violations in Egypt’s prisons

El Nadeem Center against Violence and Torture documented 196 violations in prisons and detention centres in Egypt last May.

According to the group, the violations included 33 cases of extrajudicial killing, 6 cases of death, 6 cases of individual torture, 81 cases of personal discipline, 6 cases of collective discipline, 23 cases of deliberate medical negligence, 26 cases of enforced disappearance, and 15 cases of state violence.

Last March, the group documented 103 violations, including 6 cases of individual torture, 48 cases of personal discipline, 14 cases of deliberate medical negligence, 35 cases of enforced disappearance, and 10 cases of state violence. Last February, it documented 4 cases of death, 43 cases of enforced disappearance, 9 cases of extrajudicial killing, three instances of individual torture, 78 cases of personal discipline, one case of collective discipline, one case of deliberate medical negligence, 43 cases of enforced disappearance, and 14 cases of state violence. Last January, it documented 3 cases of death, 19 cases of deliberate medical negligence, five instances of individual torture, 46 cases of personal discipline, 6 cases of collective discipline, 56 cases of enforced disappearance, and 7 cases of state violence. The group had documented 1,530 violations in its 2021 report.
