Official instructions to Egypt’s media to limit coverage of COVID-19

Egyptian journalists have informed Egypt Watch that sovereign authorities have issued supreme instructions to all official and private channels to reduce the news covering the crisis of the outbreak of the coronavirus. A journalist said that strict instructions arrived at the newspaper in which he works to only broadcast data issued by the Egyptian Ministry of Health, without expanding coverage of the crisis.

The new decision included the private satellite channels that broadcast from within the Media Production City, the 6th of October City, west of Cairo. The instructions also reached the Maspero building (Egyptian state television) and the national and private newspapers published in the country. Despite warnings from specialists about the coming of a second wave of the virus, the Egyptian government has been implementing a comprehensive plan since last month to restore all tourist activity.

The Egyptian Ministry of Health officially registered 116 cases and 17 new deaths of COVID-19 during the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of COVID-19 infections in the country to 96,336 cases and 5,141 deaths.
