29 sentences to death in Egypt during last September

The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) monitored the issuance of death sentences against 29 defendants in 17 cases last September, in addition to 10 defendants in 3 cases whose papers were referred to the Mufti during the same month. This came while 22 defendants were sentenced to death in August, in addition to 23 others in 10 different cases whose papers were referred to the Mufti. The death sentences were not executed on any of the defendants. In July, 13 defendants were sentenced to death, and the papers of 15 defendants in 9 cases were transferred to the Mufti.

The number of those executed in cases of a political nature has increased frighteningly since July 2013, according to the count of Egyptian civil society organizations that refuse to carry out death sentences due to the lack of justice in the trials.

According to the Amnesty International report for the year 2019, Egypt ranks high between countries that have resorted to the death penalty, after Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq.
