Increase in number of health care workers infected with coronavirus

Dr. Hala Salah el-Din, dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Al-Qasr Al-Aini, said that 17 health care workers at Al-Qasr Al-Aini French Hospital were infected with corona virus; 3 nurses and the rest hospital administrators. Sources within the hospital confirmed that the number had increased to 22 cases, including Dr. Iman Abdel Hadi, Director of the intensive care department who was placed on a mechanical ventilator, and Dr. Hisham Al-Saket, the Vice-Dean who was transferred to the intensive care unit of the Al-Obour quarantine hospital.

On the other hand, Dr. Walid Nasr, member of the Fayoum Medical Syndicate Council, announced that 20 health workers at Fayoum Hospital were infected, including three doctors, 15 nurses and two administrators. Nasr added that all the departments in the hospital were closed except for the renal dialysis department.

Resident doctors at Benha University Hospitals published a statement in which they revealed that seven out of eight doctors who performed the PCR test were positive, and they are waiting for the results of another 12 doctors. The doctors called for the closure of the hospital for a week, to perform PCR tests for all health care workers in the hospital, the closure of the outpatient clinics, and to establish strict infection control measures to protect all hospital workers.

The number of health care workers infected with coronavirus reached more than 13 per cent of the total number of cases, which is one of the largest percentages in the world. Egyptian hospitals suffer from a severe shortage of personal protective equipment.
