Egypt’s population hits 100 million

The Central Agency for Mobilisation and Statistics has announced that the population of Egypt has hit 100 million. The percentage of the urban population reached 42.6 per cent and the percentage of the population who are less than 15 years is 34.2 per cent. The age group from 18 to 29 years is about 21 per cent ( 20.2 million people) and people older than 65 years is 3.9 per cent. Egypt’s population was 95 million in 2017, then it reached 99 million on July 21, 2019, and it rose to 99.8 million people on January 1, 2020.

Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouly said: “The population increase represents a huge burden on the country’s resources, and impedes economic development. The time has come to implement serious plans to control childbearing rates and limit population growth.” Parliament is expected to discuss a bill next month to give incentives to families that only have two children, while depriving families that have three children and more of health and education services.
