The Central Auditing Agency has revealed that the President of Alexandria Port Authority, Captain Tareq Shaheen, embezzled EGP 103 million ($6.53 million) for himself, his deputy, and eight workers at the port from January 7 2019 to 3 October 2020, without the knowledge and approval of the transport minister.

The report revealed that the port president and his deputy have included themselves in most of the incentive bonus lists, even though their jobs are not related to the work for which the bonuses are granted.

The Central Auditing Agency recommended the necessity of investigating financial violations within the General Authority of Alexandria Port, and designing an integrated system of internal control in the authority, so as to ensure the separation of monthly salaries from bonuses, additional pay, and other allowances.

For his part, the transport minister decided to form a ministerial committee to discuss the violations mentioned in the Central Auditing Agency’s report, and to review all the decisions issued by the port president during the last period.

It is noteworthy that the former port president, Major General Medhat Attia, was dismissed from his post last year due to a report by the Central Auditing Agency that he gave himself EGP 618,000 ($39,201) worth of financial rewards for his achievements whilst managing the port.
