Alaa Khaled: The fourth political detainee to die from medical neglect during Ramadan

The international human rights organisation We Record announced the death of the 23-year-old student, Alaa Khaled, in his cell in Tora Prison. The organisation said that the student, who was suffering from heart problems, died due to willful medical negligence.

Alaa Khaled is a student at the College of Petroleum and Mining Engineering, Suez Canal University. Security forces arrested Alaa from his home in Menoufia governorate, and he was subjected to enforced disappearance for 15 days.

Alaa later appeared before the Supreme State Security Prosecution (SSSP). The SSSP issued a decision to imprison him pending Case No. 260 of 2021, State Security, on the accusation of joining the Ultras Ahlawy. The deceased student was arrested in connection with the commemoration of the death of 74 Al-Ahly fans in Port Said.

Alaa’s death comes hours after the death of former parliamentarian Ahmed Khater due to deliberate medical negligence in Burj Al Arab prison. The number of political detainees’ deaths reached four in the month of Ramadan. The total number of deaths has reached 20 deaths in places of detention since the beginning of this year.
