Wael Abbas and Walid al-Shoubki released without precautionary measures

The Supreme State Security Prosecution has canceled the precautionary measures imposed on blogger Wael Abbas and researcher Walid al-Shoubki and released them. The Criminal Court initially decided to release them on precautionary measures which would mean they spent a certain number of hours each day in the police station. Abbas and al-Shoubki were arrested on charges of publishing false news and abusing social media sites, similar accusations levelled at other journalists who are still in prison, including Adel Sabri, editor-in-chief of Masr Alarabia news website.

Abbas and al-Shoubki were arrested in June 2018 and released after seven months of pre-trial detention, in September 2018. Abbas is a blogger and journalist, well-known for his dissident articles, while al-Shoubki is a researcher at Washington University.
